What is “Black Girl Magic”? Shot on 16mm film,Toronto based director Teaunna Gray explores varying interpretations of the term, coined by educator and author, CaShawn Thompson. Black Girl Magic aims to unite Black women and girls and allow them to see themselves represented in a way that honours and uplifts Black culture – to show the magic that they hold.
The intention of the film is to visually convey the fact that being Black is not monolithic – Black does not look like one thing. Instead, this intimate short documents the raw and varied experiences of 12 Black-identifying women and girls which include perspectives from members from all backgrounds and walks of life. Ultimately, it is a love letter honouring and celebrating the beauty and diversity that Black women and girls possess.
