
Following profiles of five members of Toronto’sBlack LGBTQ communities, See Me Yah! is a tellingof their personal and political trajectories, their coming into consciousness, their intersectional identities, and their community. Using photography, verbal interviews, and traditional archival ephemera, See Me Yah! Is anexploration of the notion of archives and posits the question: can a person be an archive?
Building on Black oral traditions, the narratives in See Me Yah! are verbaland the archival information shared is embodied in the teller. Theseindividuals are the eyes, ears, minds, and hearts through which theexperience and the history of Black queer activism in Toronto – during thelatter decades of the 20th century – is told. In addition, an intergenerational dialogue will be sparked through the presence and the narratives of youngeractivist, artists, and cultural producers active today.
